TFI Local Link Wexford Rolls Out Contactless Payment for Passengers
As part of the latest phase of the National Transport Authority’s nationwide programme, TFI Local Link RRS services in Wexford will now accept contactless payment onboard services. Payments using debit or credit cards, as well as digital wallets such as Apple Pay and Google Pay will now be accepted allowing for easier and more convenient journeys.
The Wexford rollout follows a highly successful pilot scheme in Cavan and Monaghan, alongside recent expansions into Louth, Meath, Fingal, Limerick, Clare, Carlow, Kilkenny, Wicklow, Longford, Westmeath, and Roscommon. Building on the success of contactless payment elsewhere on the network, this rollout reflects the NTA’s commitment to making public transport easier to use through modern and convenient ticketing options for rural and regional communities.
Contactless payment is currently available for single-journey fares. Daily and weekly fare products remain available through the Leap website and the TFI Leap Top-Up App. TFI Leap cards, cash payments and Free Travel Cards continue to be accepted across all eligible TFI Local Link services.
The initiative forms part of the NTA’s continued plan to update public transport fare systems nationwide, which strives to promote accessibility and improve the passenger experience for those in rural and regional communities.
Edmund Betagh, TFI Local Link Programme Manager at the NTA, said: “The introduction of contactless payment on TFI Local Link Wexford RRS services marks another important step in making public transport more accessible and convenient for passengers. The strong uptake seen in other areas where contactless payment has been introduced reflects passengers’ preference for simple, fast and secure ways to pay for their journeys. As we continue to expand contactless payment across the TFI Local Link network, our focus remains on enhancing the customer experience and making public transport an even more attractive option for communities throughout Ireland.”
Mark Kinsella, General Manager at TFI Local Link Wexford, added:
“We’re pleased to introduce contactless payment on TFI Local Link Wexford RRS services offering greater flexibility and choice when paying for their journey. Feedback from areas where contactless payment has already been rolled out has been largely positive, highlighting the value of simple and convenient payment options. The introduction of onboard contactless payments options will make it even easier for customers to access local public transport services while supporting our ongoing commitment to improving connectivity and serving communities across County Wexford.”

We are proud to be recognised with a Community Impact nomination
At TFI Local Link Wexford, we are incredibly proud to have been nominated in the Community Impact category, recognising our commitment to connecting communities and improving accessibility for people right across County Wexford.
Since beginning operations in 2015, our focus has always been on supporting local communities through safe, reliable and affordable public transport services. Every day, we see first-hand the positive impact accessible transport can have on people’s lives — whether it is helping someone get to work, attend a medical appointment, meet friends and family, go shopping or simply remain connected within their community.
As part of the national TFI Local Link network operating on behalf of the National Transport Authority, we work with 11 local bus operators across County Wexford to deliver a combination of Regular Rural Services and Demand Responsive Transport services designed around the needs of local people.
Being nominated for a Community Impact award is a huge honour for our entire team and for the communities we proudly serve.
At the heart of everything we do is community. Our services are about much more than transport — they are about helping people maintain independence, reduce isolation and access opportunities that might otherwise be out of reach.
We are especially proud of the role our services play in supporting rural communities throughout Wexford. For many passengers — particularly older people, young people, those without access to a car, and people living in more isolated areas — Local Link services provide an essential lifeline.
Our Regular Rural Services operate on scheduled routes connecting towns and villages across the county several days each week, offering affordable and dependable transport for commuters, students and residents.
Alongside these services, our Demand Responsive Transport network provides a flexible pre-booked service for passengers living in more rural locations, with many routes offering convenient door-to-door collection where possible.
We are also proud to accept the Free Travel Pass on all services and remain committed to making accessibility and inclusion a priority for every passenger.
Beyond transport itself, we know our services make a real social impact by helping combat loneliness and isolation while also supporting local businesses and rural economies throughout County Wexford.
One of the most rewarding parts of our work is hearing directly from passengers who describe the service as a lifeline that helps them stay active, independent and connected within their communities.
As communities continue to grow and evolve, we remain focused on adapting and expanding our services to meet changing local needs while improving rural connectivity and integration with wider public transport networks.
This nomination means a great deal to us because it reflects the trust and support we receive from communities throughout County Wexford.
We would like to sincerely thank our passengers, local operators, community partners and dedicated staff who support the service every single day. This recognition belongs to all of them.
We remain committed to delivering accessible, dependable and community-focused transport services that continue to make a genuine difference in people’s lives.

Enniscorthy Town Bus Service Survey
TFI Local Link Wexford are working with the National Transport Authority to introduce a town bus service in Enniscorthy. To progress the implementation of a designated town bus service, TFI Local Link Wexford, with the assistance of the Conundrum Project, have prepared a questionnaire to provide information on the public transport requirements of Enniscorthy’s residents.
TFI Local Link Wexford currently manage four seven-day services that serve a number of areas within Enniscorthy and the town stops are showing usage by those living in the town despite the lack of actual bus stops. This highlights the appetite for public transport in the town. The TFI Local Link Wexford team and Wexford Co. Council Roads and Active Travel teams are working with the NTA to have bus stops installed.
MaryB O’Leary, General Manager, TFI Local Link Wexford: “In order for us to collate as much information as possible to design with the NTA the best possible town bus service for Enniscorthy we ask people to complete the survey. This is an opportunity for Enniscorthy residents to shape a town service for their town. The results of the survey will be Collated and shared with the NTA so we can begin to plan and work towards a seven-day town service.
We have no implementation date for the town service, that will be determined by the NTA and subject to funding but we will do all we can to expedite the introduction of the service.”
TFI Local Link Wexford is a member of the Enniscorthy Interagency Group who work with a wide range of stakeholders in the town to improve the lives of those living in the town and also work with the Conundrum Project, a research team based at University College Dublin and Trinity College Dublin, in collaboration with their partner TASC. Conundrum launched a strategy based on the out- come of workshops, focus groups and interviews with local communities and other stakeholders in Enniscorthy since November 2023. The strategy recorded the challenges and opportunities related to mobility experienced by different stakeholders in Enniscorthy. It presented multiple solutions and recommended actions for achieving sustainable mobility futures in Enniscorthy. It is a strategy by the community, for the community, to help shape real change. One of those recommendations was a designated town bus service.
“A town bus service for Enniscorthy is more than just transport – it’s a vital lifeline for communities. It will connect residents to jobs, healthcare, education, social activities, shops and businesses, helping the town thrive. Whether you use the bus regularly or only occasionally, your feedback is crucial in shaping its future. I would encourage people to take a few minutes to complete the survey and ensure any new bus service meets the needs of everyone in the town”. Ann Marie Laffin, Sláintecare Healthy Communities Local Development Officer, Wexford CoCo.
The Climate Action team of Wexford Co. Council are one of the stakeholders on the Interagency Group. Frank Burke, Climate Action Coordinator Wexford Co. Council: “As part of the Wexford County Council Climate Action Plan 2024 – 2029, a register of opportunities was identified for Enniscorthy, as it is our selected Decarbonisation Zone within the County of Wexford. This register is a portfolio of potential actions, projects, technologies, and interventions. It is strategic and focused on changes that could lead to large-scale emission reduction. One of the opportunities identified relates to Transport and more specifically reducing carbon emissions in Enniscorthy due to increased Active Travel.
Enniscorthy Decarbonisation Zone requires a reduction in our emissions by 51% by 2030 and the addition of an Enniscorthy Town Bus Service would contribute significantly to meeting this target. In addition, it would allow the people of Enniscorthy to reduce their dependence on cars and reduce traffic in the town and would have the added benefit of improving air quality. The provision of a Town Bus Service in Enniscorthy is a key action of the Decarbonisation Zone actions (DZBET4).”
